What does tariff mean?

Tariffs are taxes on imports collected when foreign goods cross the U.S. border via Customs and Border Protection. The money — about $80 billion last year — goes to the U.S. Treasury to help pay the federal government’s expenses. Congress has authority to say how the money will be spent. When Trump announced the tariffs, he said he wants to boost manufacturing in the U.S., reduce taxes and pay down the national debt.

Who pays for tariffs?

Companies or entities that import goods into the U.S. pay the tariffs on those goods. Economists say at least some of those costs will be passed on to consumers.

When do tariffs go into effect?

The 10% tariff is set to go into effect on Saturday, April 5. The steeper “reciprocal tariffs” are set to go into effect on Wednesday, April 9.

Which goods will get more expensive?

The widespread tariffs cover everything from your bedding, furniture, smartphones, computers and lithium-ion batteries.

Consumers in the U.S. buy a lot of stuff imported from abroad. In fact, the U.S. is the largest goods importer in the world, and imports totaled $3.2 trillion in 2022, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

The Trump administration’s 10% baseline tariff plan is set to make all imports more expensive. But certain categories of goods, including automobiles and alcohol, and certain countries, including China and Vietnam, will face higher tariffs.

From China and Vietnam, the top commodities coming into the U.S. include machinery parts, footwear and textiles. Some household names will feel the pinch from Vietnam tariffs, including Wayfair, American Eagle and Nike.

From the European Union, the U.S. imports pharmaceuticals, including those very popular weight loss drugs, wine and IKEA products.

Here’s a look at some industries and types of goods that could get substantially more expensive.

Alcohol

The Trump administration levied a 25% tariff on all U.S. beer imports, affecting Mexican Corona, Dutch Heineken and Irish Guinness.

While industry experts were relieved that Trump’s threats of a 200% tariff on European alcohol did not materialize Thursday, along with 25% tariffs on Mexican tequila and Canadian whiskey, they warned the tariffs will likely still hit sales among U.S. drinkers for European makers of wine and spirits, which amounted to 2.9 billion euros ($3.18 billion) in exports last year, NBC News reported.

Automobiles

The sweeping plan includes a 25% tariff on foreign-made cars. The news has the industry spinning, especially since U.S. auto manufacturers rely on an integrated supply chain.

Now, local car dealers are trying to figure out what this is going to look like for customers who walk into the showroom, said Rob Smith, president of Montgomery County’s Fitzgerald Auto Mall.

“Got about 15 different brands that we’ve got to keep track of,” Smith said. “Some of them have said they might just absorb it and reduce and not have any incentives, like rebates or special APR. Others have said, ‘We’re going to add a line to the sticker on the car. The MSRP will have another charge labeled the tariff charge,’” he told News4.

Even those who already own a car will be affected. On May 3, a tariff on foreign car parts, including engines, transmissions and electrical components, is scheduled to go into effect.

Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order shutting the de minimis trade loophole, effective May 2, NBC News reported.

The trade exemption allows shipments worth less than $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free.

Use of the de minimis provision has exploded in recent years as shoppers flock to Chinese e-commerce companies Temu and Shein, which offer ultra-low-cost apparel, electronics and other items. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has said it processed more than 1.3 billion de minimis shipments in 2024, up from over 1 billion shipments in 2023.

Goods that qualify under the de minimis exemption will be subject to a duty of either 30% of their value, or $25 per item. That rate will increase to $50 per item on June 1, the White House said.

Fruits, vegetables and other grocery staples

The U.S. was the top global importer of bananas in 2023, based on Observatory of Economic Complexity data. Nearly 40% of those bananas came from Guatemala, which will face a 10% tariff on goods exported to the U.S.

The U.S. imports approximately 60% of its fresh fruit and 40% of its fresh vegetables, NBC News reported. Most of those products come from Mexico, which was largely exempt from the latest round of tariffs.

Spices, coffee, cocoa and milled oats used to produce cereal could also see price increases, CNBC reports.

Footwear

Nike manufactures about half of its footwear in China and Vietnam, with about 25% coming from Vietnam. Trump will put a 34% tariff on top of existing 20% duties on imports from China, for an apparent rate of 54%, a White House official told CNBC.

Nearly a third of footwear imports in the U.S. came from Vietnam in 2023, the most recent full-year data available, according to the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America, an industry trade group, NBC News reported.

Toys

Toymakers have also leaned on Vietnam to make more merchandise that’s imported and sold to kids and adults across the U.S. Hasbro, SpinMaster, Mattel and Crayola are among the companies that work with GFT Group, one of the largest toy manufacturers in the Southeast Asia.

How soon will prices rise?

It depends on how businesses both in the U.S. and overseas respond, but consumers could see overall prices rising within a month or two of tariffs being imposed. For some products, such as produce from Mexico, prices could rise much more quickly after the tariffs take effect.

Some U.S. retailers and other importers may eat part of the cost of the tariff, and overseas exporters may reduce their prices to offset the extra duties. But for many businesses, the tariffs Trump announced Wednesday — such as 20% on imports from Europe — will be too large to swallow on their own.

Companies may also use the tariffs as an excuse to raise prices. When Trump slapped duties on washing machines in 2018, studies later showed that retailers raised prices on both washers and dryers, even though there were no new duties on dryers.

A key question in the coming months is whether something similar will happen again. Economists worry that consumers, having just lived through the biggest inflationary spike in four decades, are more accustomed to rising prices than they were before the pandemic.

Yet there are also signs that Americans, put off by the rise in the cost of living, are less willing to accept price increases and will simply cut back on their purchases. That could discourage businesses from raising prices by much.

The recall, issued Mar. 20, applies to 50 fluid-ounce bottles of liquid Woolite Delicates detergent, the announcement said. Approximately 16,200 bottles were recalled, with lot codes S24364, S24365 and S24366. Each of the bottles is white with a light pink label and cap, the announcement said.

According to the announcement, the recalled products contain “Pseudomonas species bacteria,” including Pseudomonas oleovorans, an environmental organism found in soil and water. Those with weakened immune systems or external medical devices who are exposed to the bacteria could face the risk of “serious infection” and could require medical treatment.

According to the announcement such bacteria can enter the body through the eyes or a break in the skin. Those with healthy immune systems are not typically affected by the bacteria, the announcement said.

Consumers in possession of these now-recalled scooters are urged to stop using them immediately and contact Segway to request a free maintenance kit. This kit includes tools and step-by-step instructions to inspect and adjust the scooters’ locking mechanism as needed, Segway says.

“Over time, depending on riding conditions, the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening,” California-based Segway writes on its website. “No returns or replacements are involved.”

According to the CPSC, the Segway scooters involved in this recall were manufactured in China and Malaysia and sold at in-person retailers across the U.S. — like Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club, as well as online at Segway.com and Amazon.com, between January 2020 and February 2025. Sale prices ranged from $600 to $1,000.

The USDA announced the news after being notified by manufacturer Idaho Smokehouse Partners that they, “received two consumer complaints reporting that pieces of metal were found in the product.”

The products being recalled are 1.15-oz vacuum-sealed packages of “CHOMPS ORIGINAL BEEF STICK MILD” produced from Jan. 13 to Jan. 15. Items are printed with an expiration date of Feb. 10, 2026 and lot code 25016 on the label.

The affected product also lists establishment number 6220A on the packaging. Items were shipped to retail locations in California and Illinois.

There have been no confirmed reports of injury due to consumption, according to the USDA. Those concerned about an injury due to consumption should contact a healthcare provider.

The USDA urges consumers who may have purchase these products to not consume them. Contaminated products should be disposed of or returned to the place of purchase.

Del Monte Foods, Inc., issued a voluntary recall last month for nearly 200,000 cans of the Target brand Good & Gather Cut Green Beans, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA did not specify what the foreign object might be.

The agency noted in a report that this is a Class II recall, which means exposure to a product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” or may indicate a situation in which “probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

Canned green beans with the following description are involved in the recall, according to the FDA:

The recall affects cans sold in 21 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. 

This week, certain varieties of Lean Cuisine and Stouffer’s meals were also voluntarily recalled over possible foreign object contamination, with the FDA citing the possible presence of “wood-like material” in the packaged meals.

Food recalls involving foreign object contamination are relatively rare; of all the food recalls issued by the FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture last year, just over 4% were due to foreign objects, according to PIRG, a consumer advocacy group.

Last year, the most common cause of food recalls in the U.S. was undeclared allergens (34.1%), followed by listeria contamination (22%).

Multiple food recalls have been announced this month. On March 13, Trader Joe’s recalled certain lots of Gerolsteiner sparkling water over concerns that in rare cases, the glass bottles holding the water could crack along the bottom.

Certain macaroni and cheese bites sold at Whole Foods were also recalled because they may contain undeclared egg and meat ingredients, according to the FDA.

SeaBear Company also recently recalled two varieties of its seafood chowder due to potential contamination with a bacterium that can cause botulism, a possibly fatal form of food poisoning.

The medicine poses a risk of poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children, according to the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

Arsell issued a recall involving about 2,300 bottles of Benadryl Liquid Elixir sold from July 2023 through October 2024.

The 100 mL bottle contains diphenhydramine, which must be in child-resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act.

No incidents or injuries related to the recall have been reported.

The product was sold in a round dark plastic bottle with a pink and white label on the front with the word “Benadryl” in blue text. It was packaged in a paper box with the code “X003VRIGUL” at the bottom.

Consumers are advised to keep the Benadryl out of sight and reach of children and contact Arsell for a full refund. They are asked to submit their Amazon order numbers, along with a photo showing disposal of the recalled bottle, to recall@arsellsupport.com.

The voluntary recall covers a part of the vehicle known as a cant rail and affects all Cybertrucks manufactured from November 2023 to February 2025, Tesla wrote in its filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration dated March 18.

Owners of affected vehicles can take their Cybertrucks to Tesla’s service department for free replacement of the cant rail, the company wrote.

Tesla’s value has dropped by around 40% year to date as CEO Elon Musk works as a top advisor to President Donald Trump and leads the administration’s job-slashing team known as the Department of Government Efficiency.

Because of its unique design, the angular unpainted steel Cybertruck is frequently targeted by people who oppose Musk. Cybertruck owners have complained online of everything from rude gestures to harassment and vandalism.

Tesla also faces increasing competition in battery electric vehicles, and like other U.S. automakers it is dealing with tariff and trade uncertainty after Trump signed multiple executive orders imposing major new tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and mainland China.

Tesla does not break out sales figures by model. However, the recalled vehicles represent a majority of Cybertrucks on the road.

Since Tesla began deliveries of its unusual pickup truck in November 2023, the Cybertruck has been plagued by manufacturing problems and quality issues. The NHTSA’s website reflects that there have been nine recalls of the Cybertruck.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Thursday, The Information reported that Tesla plans to introduce Cybertruck battery tech in 2025 that would “sharply decrease battery manufacturing costs,” citing a senior executive.

“The adhesive used to hold the piece can fail, causing the cant rail to separate from the vehicle,” read a portion of a statement from NHTSA. “Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the issue.”

The NHTSA said Tesla implemented the recall after “discussions” with the automotive safety agency. They also noted that vehicle owners with a safety complaint or concern can fill out a Vehicle Owner’s Questionnaire online, or call the agency’s hotline to let regulators know there may be an issue. “As long as you don’t wash them, you can leave them on the counter for up to a month,” Homestead Glenda told us.

So, while you may not actually save money on eggs, you can enjoy the experience. Obviously, you’re going to get fresh eggs each day, but kids (and adults) can love the experience of having chickens.

If you’re worried about the noise, Homestead Glenda says chickens are not as loud as roosters. Of course, you will need to make sure your county or jurisdiction allows chickens. (If your neighbors complain, offer them some free eggs.)

Chickens are typically friendly, and they can make great pets. If you end up loving them, you can actually choose to buy them at the end of your rental period.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Triangle Tube announced Thursday that the Prestige Solo, Prestige Excellence and Aerco Esteem condensing gas boilers have been recalled.

The boilers were found to be releasing carbon monoxide due to delayed ignitions or component damage. Two people died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, including a 47-year-old woman in 2015 and an 85-year-old man in 2016.

More than 60,000 products sold in the U.S. since 2011 are impacted by the recall, plus another 7,500 sold in Canada. There have been 25 reports of carbon monoxide leaks from the recalled boilers.

Consumers with recalled boilers should contact Triangle Tube via phone, email or online to set up an inspection, with free replacements available if necessary.

Food service company Lyons Magnus said in a statement Saturday it was voluntarily recalling all 4 oz. packs of Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes, in response to a recall from manufacturer Prairie Farms, based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. 

As of Friday, 38 people have been infected across 21 states. Of these, 27 were hospitalized and 11 died — although the FDA did not say when these deaths took place and said the outbreak can be traced back seven years. 

Some 34 victims were either residents in long-term care facilities or had already been hospitalized. Records from the facilities involved showed that the shakes were available to residents and patients, the FDA said.

The FDA said it was first notified of an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to the product on Nov. 25 last year “with many ill people residing in long-term care facilities (LTCF) prior to illness onset.”

“As soon as Lyons Magnus learned of the issue, it took immediate action to halt the purchase of all products from the affected Prairie Farms facility, notify customers, and ensure that impacted products were removed from distribution nationally,” the company said in its statement. 

The FDA said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that this outbreak can be traced back to 2018, although it was not clear exactly how, when or where the infections were reported.

Symptoms of Listeriosis, a listeria infection, typically start two weeks after eating contaminated food but can start up to 10 weeks later. These may include fever, muscle aches and nausea and in serious cases confusion, stiff neck and convulsions. Pregnant women, people over the age of 65 and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk.

An infant died and 10 adults were sickened amid a four-state listeria outbreak connected to ready-to-eat meat products last year.

The recall was initiated Dec. 9, 2024 by Chicago-based Riverside Natural Foods Inc., the FDA said, and applies to a variety of different granola bars from the brand MadeGood. On Feb. 11, the FDA labeled the recall as “Class II,” which indicates the products, if consumed, could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

In a Q&A on their site, MadeGood said it initiated the recall “out of an abundance of caution and commitment to the well-being of our valued customers.”

According to the FDA, an investigation revealed the issue found was in the manufacturing process of specific batches. MadeGood said the piece of metal — described as “a small, flat brush bristle” — is “highly unlikely” to be present in one of its granola bars.

“We received seven complaints out of the hundreds of millions of bars sold, and no injuries have been reported,” the brand said. Consumers who have purchased the products are advised to return them to their point of purchase for a full refund.

The FDA added that the company has “remediated the issue” and tested a new process to “ensure that any future risk is fully mitigated.”

MadeGood describes their granola bar products as “healthier” snack alternatives that are organic and allergen-friendly.

Riverside Natural Foods, Inc. preemptively issued a voluntary recall of 2,408,883 cases of MadeGood granola bars on Dec. 9, 2024. That came after certain batches produced between January and November 2024 were found to potentially contain metal.

The company described the piece of metal as a “small, flat brush bristle.”

At the time of the recall, MadeGood said no injuries had been reported.

The affected products included 12 flavors sold in the U.S., Canada and other international markets, the company said. According to its website, MadeGood granola bars can be found at Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, Amazon and other major in person and online retailers.

Customers are advised to check the product codes and sell-by dates on their purchased boxes. Those who suspect they purchased an affected product may also return the bars to the store from which they were purchased for a full refund.

A posting from the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday said Setsmart issued a recall for LoGest climbing ropes made of hemp that can weaken and break, creating a fall hazard.

The recall includes climbing ropes with carabiners and climbing ropes with heavy-duty metal hooks.

Consumers are instructed to immediately uninstall and stop using the recalled ropes. There have been 13 reports of the ropes breaking, according to the CPSC, and that includes one reported fall that resulted in a severe spinal cord injury.

The CPSC said about 22,500 units of the recalled ropes were sold in the U.S., with around 350 sold in Canada and roughly 25 in Mexico. The ropes were sold in lengths ranging from 10 to 50 feet on Amazon.com from March 2021 through November 2024.

Consumers can start the process for a full refund at LoGestRopeRecall.com. The CPSC said consumers will receive a form to sign with disposal instructions and must email a photo of the disposed rope to LoGestRecall@gmail.com in order to be eligible for the refund.

A posting from the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday said the front-mounted knobs on the recalled ranges can be activated by accidental contact from humans or pets, creating a fire hazard.

The CPSC said it’s received at least 86 reports of the recalled ranges being accidentally turned on. The ranges have been involved in more than 28 fires, with at least five fires causing over $340,000 in total property damage, according to the CPSC. There have been at least eight reports of minor injuries and three reports of fires involving pet deaths, the CPSC said.

The recall includes 22 models of slide-in and freestanding ranges, according to the CPSC. They were sold from 2015 through January 2025 nationwide at appliance stores like Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot and Lowe’s, and online at LG.com. The CPSC website has a full list of recalled model numbers, which can be found inside the oven door or storage drawer.

Owners of the recalled ranges are instructed to contact LG for a free warning label, which includes a reminder to use the lock out/control lock function. The function, which can be found on the control panel, disables activation of heating elements when the appliance isn’t being used, according to the CPSC.

Consumers are also advised to keep children and pets away from the ranges, to check that the knobs aren’t activated before leaving home or going to sleep, and not to leave objects on the ranges when not in use.

Samples of the dog food collected on Jan. 8 were found to have salmonella bacteria after being tested by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Food and Drug Protection Laboratory, according to a release by the Food & Drug Administration.

The North Carolina-based Blue Ridge Beef was notified by the FDA on Jan. 27 about the salmonella contamination.

The products were sold between Jan. 3 and Jan. 24 in retail stores in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee and Rhode Island, according to the FDA.

Salmonella infections in pets can cause diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and decreased appetite, per the FDA. Pets with salmonella infections can also infect other humans and other animals. Anyone whose pet has shown symptoms after consuming the recalled product is urged to contact a veterinarian.

There also is risk to humans of getting a salmonella infection from handling the recalled pet food.

Anyone who did not thoroughly wash their hands after handling the affected dog food or touched surfaces exposed to the product could potentially get a salmonella infection.

It can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever as well as more serious conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms, according to the FDA.

Anyone who purchased the recalled product is urged to return it or throw it out in a way that it can’t be accessed by children, pets and wildlife, the FDA advises.

The product should also not be fed to any other animals or donated. Pet food bowls, cups and storage containers should also be washed and sanitized, according to the FDA.

The FDA announce the initial recall last year over a list of chocolate items sold from Cal Yee Farm, a company based in California. That original warning marked items like chocolate walnuts, chocolate raisins, chocolate almonds, yogurt coated almonds and chocolate apricots because they may contain undeclared ingredients. According to the recall, the items were sold across nine states, including Pennsylvania, California, Arizona, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon and Ohio. The company has an online store as well.

There were no illnesses reported related to the chocolate goods at the time of the recall, the FDA said.

The upgraded recall concerns Cal Yee Farm’s dark chocolate almonds, dark chocolate apricots and dark chocolate Walnuts.

The FDA advised anyone who has purchased any of the recalled items to dispose of them or return them for a full refund.

The California company released a statement in response to the original recall: “We did a voluntary recall on undeclared milk, soy, wheat, sesame, FD&C #6 and almonds in snack products, due to outdated labels which did not specify allergen statement. Labels are now consistent with known allergens.”

The car manufacturer said in a release Wednesday that sudden changes in the throttle of affected vehicles could illuminate the check engine light and cause the engine to hesitate, stall or lose drive power, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

American Honda said the recalled vehicles have fuel injection electronic control units (FI-ECU) with improper programming, which could lead to the engine problems. The company said it self-diagnosed the issue through the monitoring of telematics information.

The recall includes certain 2023-25 Honda Pilot, 2022-25 Acura MDX Type S and 2021-25 Acura TLX Type S vehicles. Authorized Honda and Acura dealerships will update the FI-ECU software on affected vehicles for free, the company said.

American Honda said it hasn’t received any confirmed reports of crashes or injuries related to the issue.

“American Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of affected vehicles to take them to an authorized dealer for repair as soon as they receive notification,” the company said.

Letters notifying owners of affected vehicles are expected to be mailed on March 17, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A public health alert was issued for frozen, fully cooked Wegmans breaded chicken breast nuggets by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, with hopes of making sure customers are aware that they shouldn’t eat them. A typical recall from the agency wasn’t issued because the product is no longer for sale.

The alert covers 46 ounce plastic packages containing “Wegmans Family Pack Fully Cooked Breaded Chicken Breast with Rib Meat” with a best if used by date of Aug. 26, 2025. That is located on the back of the packaging next to the barcode in the lower right corner. The product was produced on Aug. 26, 2024.

The nuggets were made for Wegmans Food Markets and distributed in Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service said that it was notified of the issue after Wegmans received multiple consumer complaints of bone fragments in the product.

There have been no confirmed reports of injury due to consumption.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service said that it is concerned that consumers may still have some of the nugget packages in their freezers. Consumers who still have packages are urged not to eat the product, and to throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased.

Wegmans said that all packages can be returned for a full refund.
